GT Seminar Information

Please read this important note about GT seminars from Mrs. Mako to both students and parents.

WOW! Students signed up for almost 350 seminars!  I'm excited to work with you all! This week, I have been busy creating the seminars' Canvas courses and enrolling students in the seminars they selected.  This is a large enrollment number (and I also have my regular classes to teach), so may I please ask for your help?

Students:

  • Please make sure that you read ALL announcements (like this one) that are sent out through the MVMS Student Resources Course.  In particular, read the Weekly Student News that is sent out on Monday mornings.
  • Watch for a new Canvas course related to your seminar to show up in your dashboard.  Please be patient!  I have to create each course and enroll each student BY HAND.  With this large number of students, it takes time.  Your seminar course might not show up until the day before your seminar Meet next week.  If you change your mind about a seminar, I'll be able to help you next week.  Don't worry!
  • For next week ONLY, the Google Meet codes FOR ALL SEMINARS will be mvms-smako-gt.  This will help us get started with lessons, just in case I make an accident during the enrollment process. Again, I am hand enrolling a lot of students, so I don't have time to check my work prior to the first Meet.
  • I might not have time to get all Meets scheduled in Canvas calendars.  It is critical that you attend these first Meets in order to get fully enrolled in the GT seminar, so please make your own note to attend at these times:
    • Digital Media:  Tues 11:00
    • Future City:  Tues 11:30
    • SGA (7th and 8th ONLY):  Wed 11:30  (NOTE:  6th graders don't start SGA yet.  Stay tuned...)
    • Debate:  Thurs 11:00
    • Writers Workshop and Book Club:  Thurs 11:30
    • TV:  Fri 11:00
    • NHD:  Fri 11:30
  • As much as possible, please save questions until next week's Meets.  If you attend the wrong Meet, attend an extra Meet, aren't sure about a seminar (whatever your concern is), please show up to Meets and I can help!

Parents:  Please make sure that your child understands these instructions and has a method in place to remember next week's Meet time and code.

By working together, we can make sure that all interested students successfully start GT seminars next week.  I really don't want to have to limit the number of students taking a seminar, so please help each other as much as possible.

Next week, between my seminars and my regular classes, I will Meet with over 400 students!  This is only possible because MVMS students truly are respectful, responsible, and ready to learn. :))

MAP Assessments

On Wednesday, October 7 and 14, students in grades 2-8 will take the Measured Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. The data from the MAP assessment will help schools and teachers measure where your child is starting the year academically. The HCPSS intends to also give the assessment in winter and spring to measure how your child’s learning is progressing throughout the year. The MAP test does not affect grades and the difficulty adjusts depending on how your child responds. It is normal for students to only answer about half the questions correctly.  To learn more about the MAP assessment, please visit: https://www.nwea.org/the-map-suite/common-questions-families/

The Reading test will be offered on October 7 at 9 am and 1 pm.  The Math test will be offered on October 14 at 9 am and 1 pm.  It does not matter if you have math or ELA second semester, this is for all eligible students. Students may choose to attend either the morning or afternoon session. If your child is unable to attend, makeup testing will be offered during asynchronous learning times. Teachers will share Google Meet information and your student’s testing group as we get closer to the Oct 7th date. Students will be testing through their Homeroom/Flex Teachers. Please be sure to attend the 10/5 Flex class for login information and the device checks. The google meet codes for each group will be posted in the FLEX Class CANVAS page.

Students in High School Level math classes (Algebra 1, Algebra 1 GT, Geometry GT, and any accelerated math) will not be taking the math assessment.  Students in English/Language Arts GT Grade 8 will not be taking the reading assessment.

Any questions, please email Ms. K. Hess at Kimberly_Hess@hcpss.org.
