A team of six MVMS students won two awards at the Mid-Atlantic Future City Competition in Baltimore. The awards were received for Best First Year City and Best Urban Spaces, the theme of this year's competition.

Congratulations to Michael Wade,  Ryan Lim, Colin Hartigan, Hudson Grill, Gyuseok Kang, and Matty Barbera.

What is Future City?  Students study city design and the role of engineers in urban planning.  They create a fictional city 100 years in the future that is trying to solve a problem.  For this year's competition, the students had to create a city that was renovating two types of urban spaces.
As part of the project, the students:

  • created a virtual city using SimCity software to test for appropriate tax rates, city services, and infrastructure
  • wrote an essay that described the history of their city and how their urban spaces were being renovated to solve problems in the city
  • created a model of their city - to scale (we chose 1" = 50 ft)
  • gave a presentation about their city in front of judges
